It’s situated almost at the place where the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World begins, just 4 miles from the town of Page. While 5 miles downstream is the impressive Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, the second largest man-made reservoir in the United States.

The overlook is 1,000-feet (300 m) above the river itself and can be accessed via a 1.5-mile round-trip hike.

Tapestry of Microbes

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone exudes such vivid colors around the edges of the mineral-rich water in the spring. These are the result of microbial mats which tend to be mainly orange and red in the summer, and usually dark green in the winter. The center of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.

A Canyon At Peace

Antelope Canyon, Arizona, USA

There are infinite view points within Lower Antelope Canyon, but I kept on seeing faces of time carved by years of erosion to the Navajo sandstone rock which line the canyon walls.

This set of images portrays the peace and quiet of the slot canyon in the black and white photograph through to the more abrasive windy and dusty aspect.

Photo tours are available at both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon through Dixie Ellis Canyon Tours.

A Heavenly Moment

Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona

The stunning interior of Antelope Canyon allows you to experience many extraordinary views, some of them by occasionally peering skywards. The thin strata of ‘flowing’ Navajo sandstone is caused by millennia of flash flooding and erosion leaving what is now one of the most magical places to visit, experience and photograph.

Lower Antelope Canyon photography tours are available from Dixie Ellis Tours and well worth taking.

Canyon on Lake Powell

Arizona

When Glen Canyon Dam was completed in 1963 on the Colorado River, it created Lake Powell. This is one of those many inlets which ebb and flow depending on the rainfall upstream. However, in recent years it’s been more ebb than flow due to periods of extended drought.

More than 2 million people a year visit the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area which encompasses Lake Powell.

Lower Antelope Canyon

Arizona, USA

Lower Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon located on Navajo land close to Lake Powell and the town of Page in Arizona. There is also a second and more visited Upper Antelope Canyon a few miles away. Both are susceptible to flash flooding in the monsoon season and can be completely flooded with little prior warning.

Lower Antelope Canyon, (or “spiral rock arches” as the Navajo describe them), attracts more photographers due to the special ‘photographer tours’ on offer, and also draws larger numbers of casual sightseers than in Upper.

Irish Cottage at Twilight

Old stone cottages are a rare sight in Ireland nowadays. Most have been demolished or fallen into disrepair. This wonderful example is located on Mannin Bay near Ballyconneely in the south western part of the Connemara region in the West of Ireland.

On this glorious summer evening the farmers were out making hay in the old traditional way, building haycocks by hand with pitchforks!

The Burren in the West of Ireland

The Burren, Co. Clare, Ireland

In Irish, the Burren means “great rock“. It’s a region in County Clare on the West coast of the country, dominated by karst landscape and measures an area of around 250 square kilometres.

Having an unusually temperate climate which allows for a longer growing season and an unusual environment, the region supports a rich and diverse plant life which includes arctic, alpine and Mediterranean plants all growing side-by-side. The most famous is the gorgeous deep blue Spring Gentian which flowers around May time.

Pheasant in Flight

Speed of flight – South of England

Pheasants often break cover from a corn field, or vineyard in this instance at high speed. Feeding on ground cover, they have to rise through the crop and flee in haste. Expecting to hear the sound of gunshot as the shooting season starts, this bird put on a fly-past performance that was hard to follow!

Male birds are highly decorated with bright colours and have a longer tail than the females. They typically eat seeds and a few insects.
